Other than running into bears… I’m limping. Coming from non-impact sports (you’re only ’supposed’ to increase activity mileage by 10% per season) the impact of running is hurting. I have given myself the start of stress fracture… so that means riding bike, and swimming. Ideally I wouldn’t be walking even (standard procedure is to have walking casts on for stress fractures) but I’m ambling along in the woods with the dogs. Also my friendly neighborhood chiropractor is helping, and I’m running in the river. If anyone in the Chelasea area has an elliptical type machine that I could use at some point, please contact me. Thanks. more »
It wouldn’t be July if there weren’t cyclists getting popped for dope. Other years I would just watch the live coverage. Doping scandals can break at any time, so it’s key tp check in regularly. Ricco, well he was too good to be true on those climbs. Not that I’m jumping on the bandwagon. But he probably used up all his stored ‘clean’ (taken out during the winter) blood during the Giro, and had to medicate here. Also I guess the tests are getting better, so that’s good for those of us who abstain. However the problem is that the drugs keep getting better. A recent study showed 8% performance increase from EPO use… so when the guys who are in 15th spot are doping, but also getting left behind by minutes… what are the leaders doing? more »
Yesterdays weather in Clermont FL : 91 degrees, and 73% humidity.
The average temperature for Kona October 11th is 86 degrees, and 50-80% humidity. Of course in Kona I will be starting my run around 1pm.
I’ve got my head down, running up the first hill on the dirt trail through the orange groves. I’m busy adjusting my hat to reduce the glare, and look up to see that I am 5 feet away from stepping on a Gator! Let me repeat that:

The Crystal River Sprint Triathlon took place on the Saturday following the 4th of July. 227 athletes registered for the 2nd race in the series and the entire day went very smooth. Everyone had fun and we saw some fast times at the finish. Nat Faulkner from Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada wasn’t bothered by the heat as he took a significant lead during the bike, averaging 26.5 mph, and turned a scorching 56:54 for the course to win the Overall Male Title.
After the great Canada Day celebration… I drove to Albany, (fyi googling Albany airport and driving there will result in a regional jet-free airport, luckily I was far enough ahead of schedule that I could turn around and drive the Albany International Airport) more »
Though it’s hard to judge this type of thing, I have heard from reliable sources that the Muskoka Chase, or Muskoka Long, is the second largest triathlon in Canada behind Ironman.
I have been training, but not too much, as August and September will be really big months getting ready for Hawaii. For now my main objective is swim improvement, stay fit, and fresh. With that in mind I have dramatically cut back on my training… what does that entail? In the ‘easy’ 6 days before the Muskoka race, I rode my bike once, ran 3x, and got in 7 swims.
I met up with Phil V and here is the correct Sable Goggle web address. As I mentioned before there isn’t a more optically correct, higher quality goggle (check this review). If I wasn’t getting these free I would be buying them! When I felt something nibbling my toes before the swim start, a glance showed me a it was a turtle. more »
So I got up to Chelsea Quebec yesterday for the Tuesday of the long weekend. I love this area, quiet clean. And last August this is when I get into the swim of things again.
Most importantly my allergies are minimal up here. So I was pretty happy to be able to go out riding today, and then do a lap of the Park tempo (22km) and just feel good. In fact so good that I kept on going for a bit, just enjoying being able to breath deeply, and un-hindered. more »

Like the wheels on his bike, his life has come full circle toward achieving a childhood dream. After several years making a living road cycling for various teams in the United States, including a short stint with the Trek Volkswagen team, Nat Faulkner came home to Muskoka to compete in the Muskoka Triathlon in Huntsville this weekend with new friend and training partner, Sean Bechtel.Far from physically intimidating, at only five foot seven, Faulkner is seemingly chiselled from granite, solidly built with an inner strength to match, clearly conveyed in his eyes and delivered in an unwavering sure voice.

So a few quick things before I disappear again.
Getting back to the team training house in the ‘Hammer’ aka Hamilton Ontario, it’s a great training environment, but I was a little overtrained and needed rest. This wasn’t really too surprising, as all this swimming and running was new to my body and Coach Barrie Shepley and I had to find out what kind of work loads I could handle… now we have a better idea. more »
